Hawaiian Electric introduced it’s constructing the island of Maui’s first giant standalone load-shifting battery vitality storage system. The Waena BESS will allow the deliberate retirement of 4 producing items on the utility’s Kahului Energy Plant, an oil energy plant.

Permitted by the Public Utilities Fee in December 2023, the Waena BESS shall be a grid-connected 40-MW/160-MWh battery vitality storage system that shall be situated on the company-owned property alongside Pulehu Highway in Central Maui.
